It’s obvious that we are facing the problem with insufficient food. The population is getting higher while arable land is getting smaller due to urbanization which makes decrease the number of people working for producing field such as farmers and fisherman. The unpredictable climatic changes and political negotiations between the world powers are also significant factors causing food problem. In this international situation, GMO food might be one of the good solutions to manage with the food problem.
I don’t mind produce and consume it. It’s much cheaper than natural things and the producers can produce more efficiently. However, who can ensure GMO food is safe? We can see some cases caused by eating GMO food. New type of diseases and allergies which nobody has ever heard are occurring without knowing its causes. But we can say we eat GMO food every day. Just we don’t know it. It’s anywhere, in restaurants and markets. Last month, a Korean huge food producing company CJ was on the news. CJ is a well-known company that it doesn’t use GM ingredient but It was the company which imports the GM ingredients most in Korea and CJ didn’t notice they are using it on they products. KCA (Korean Consumers Agency) criticize CJ on its own regular publication and CJ admitted it and apologize to the people.
There are still arguments about safeties of GMO food between scientists, consumer groups and government. I think we need to be more careful in consuming GMO food and the companies must notice consumers to know when they but it based on the institutional law.
